![]() “Sci-Fi was a huge influence,” Score said. ![]() “There were movies like ‘Alien’ back then and people were really fascinated by aliens and space. It wasn’t like we were jumping on a trend. We put out this spacey album and it was embraced. I look back at that period and I can’t help but smile since I was not a trained musician but I always loved music and I still do. WHERE: House of Independents, 572 Cookman Ave.How ironic this thread appeared, because I have been on a major AFOS kick for the last few weeks. I've been going through vinyl collecting phases, collecting entire UK discographies of LP, 12" and 7" (which sucks when you are in the U.S. and have to ship from all over the world). I started getting the AFOS vinyl a few weeks ago and have been playing my CD's (on my iPhone) with increased frequency. I still have a lot of vinyl to buy and just today shelled out $30 (with shipping) for a decent copy of the 'I Ran' UK 12". I could get poorer condition copies cheaper but I'm trying to get them in decent shape.ĪFOS were my first MTV love in May 1982. From the minute I saw the video for 'I Ran', I was hooked. I still adore the video and it's a total timepiece of the era. The guitar work of Paul Reynolds was the heart of the music, and there's no way around it. Mike Score may claim he wrote the songs entirely on his own, but his one-fingered keyboard work shows his musical limitations. Paul was a tormented genius who self-destructed, rather than building further. He had such a distinctive sound that brought those songs to life. I was amazed to find out he was only a teenager at the time. All of the singles from it, including 'Telecommunication', 'Modern Love is Automatic' and 'Space Age Love Song', are all stellar, as are album tracks 'You Can Run', 'Messages' and 'Standing in the Doorway'. And I cannot forget the non-LP winners 'Windows' and 'Pick Me Up'. What a great and individual sound they had. Listen was a great sophomore album, though I will admit that I've never been in love with 'Wishing'. I much prefer 'Nightmares' and especially the new version of '(It's Not Me) Talking'. Unfortunately, the music videos for those songs are soooo bad. Side 2 of that album has always been a favorite from start to finish. 'Electrics', 'The Traveler', 'Over The Border', and the awesome gothic sounds of 'The Fall' are amazing. Other than the classic 'The More You Live, The More You Love', the third album, The Story of a Young Heart, escaped me for years. ![]() They dumped the sci-fi themes and started writing about, gasp, human problems. The ad was created by Baltimore-based agency GKV, and produced by Rhythm and Hue Studios. But I re-evaluated the album several years ago and realized how excellent it really is, thanks again primarily to Paul Reynolds. If you’re eligible, Cape Cod Potato Chips are giving away a a year’s supply of chips to random fans on their Facebook page. The singing seagulls even sports a mini version of Mike Score’s iconic hairstyle, and the drummer has a distinct pecking style to his work. ![]() In the ad a man snacks away as a voice over says, “What could be better than Cape Cod Chips… maybe if you ate them on a beach while a flock of seagulls sings A Flock of Seagulls”. The 1980s classic has now been resurrected for this ad for Cape Cod Potato Chips. Here’s a review of a recent show in Miami. Mike Score still tours as A Flock of Seagulls with various musicians, bringing the music of the 1980s to new generation. The original group disbanded in 1986, reforming for a brief tour and VH1 performance in 2003 before going their separate ways again. Mike had actually been a hairdresser before the band took off in the early 80s with the worldwide hit “I Ran (So Far Away)”. One of the defining images of the 1980s was the gravity-defying hair style of Mike Score, lead singer of A Flock of Seagulls.
